Greeting

My name is Noriyoshi Fukushima, and I am a member of the Department of Pathology at Jichi Medical University. Thank you for visiting the website.

The Division of Comprehensive Pathology is newly established on June 1, 2024, and we would like to use this website to introduce the research activities and educational policies of our department.

| The goal of comprehensive pathology

In recent years, medical research has progressed rapidly, and the field of pathology has become increasingly specialized. For example, with the development of genomic medicine, some fields have begun to see the standardization of molecular-level classification beyond traditional histopathological classification.

On the other hand, the diseases that pathology deals with are wide-ranging. Although the proportion of tumor lesions is high, there are also an increasing number of cases in which immune disorders, inflammatory diseases, infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, and other conditions are involved in a single patient's pathology in a complex manner, especially in an aging patients.

The Department of Comprehensive Pathology works closely with the Department of Diagnostic Pathology at the University Hospital, which is the clinical department, to continue to explore "what is happening inside the body." We aim to reaffirm the importance of thinking comprehensively about the various pathological conditions occurring inside the body, and to incorporate this thinking into research, education, and clinical activities.

| Research content and interests

My research has mainly focused on precancerous and early lesions of tumors, and I have been conducting research projects targeting pancreatic and biliary cancer, which is a representative of intractable cancers. The results are also shown in the fact that I was invited to serve as the only Japanese member of the final consensus conference on the WHO (International Health Organization) Classification Book (commonly known as the Blue Book), a pancreatic cancer expert member of the ICCR ( International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting ), and an editor for the WHO Reporting System for Pancreaticobiliary Cytopathology.

Making use of this experience, our department aims to conduct research that captures the essence of disease from multiple angles, based on pathology and pathological diagnosis, and to disseminate the results of our research to the world.

| Educational Activities

In addition to providing medical school education (Basic Medicine "General Pathology", "Pathology Practical Training", Clinical Medicine II "Clinical Pathology Conference", and required and optional BSL), this department is also committed to training the next generation of pathologists. In addition to lectures and training for graduate students and interns, we also actively provide guidance on presenting at international conferences and writing papers.

| Commitment to medical care activities

All faculty members of the Department of Pathology also work as clinical physicians in the Department of Pathology at the affiliated hospital. For more information, please visit the Department of Pathology website (https://www.jichi.ac.jp/pathology/).

| Social Contribution Activities

Based in the Pathology Department of Jichi Medical University, we established the general incorporated association PathPort Anywhere Pathology Lab in 2021, and are engaged in activities to support local pathologists and train the next generation of pathologists.
(For more information, please visit the PathPort Anywhere Pathology Lab website.  https://pathport.or.jp/)

In 2024, we also began operating PathPort-J, an online community centered on pathology for medical students and clinical residents.

Through these efforts, we are deepening our connections and collaborations with many pathologists and future pathologists across the country.

| Conclusion

The Division of Comprehensive Pathology and Pathology will continue to strive to contribute to the advancement of pathology research and the development of new medical technologies. We appreciate your understanding and support of the activities of our team. We are also recruiting graduate students who would like to delve deeply into pathology based on the observation of lesions at the tissue level, so please contact us.
